How Does an NFC Review Card Work?

How an NFC review card works, explained simply: the chip, the tap, phone compatibility, setup, and why venues use them to collect more customer reviews.

An NFC review card is a card, plate or stand containing a small wireless chip. When a customer holds their phone near it, a notification appears on their screen; one tap opens your review page. No app, no camera, no typing — from counter to Google review form in about two seconds. Here's what's actually happening inside that little moment, and what to know before putting one on your counter.

The technology, in plain English

NFC stands for Near Field Communication — the same short-range wireless standard behind contactless payments and phone wallets. An NFC tag is a passive chip (no battery, nothing to charge) with a tiny antenna, storing a small piece of data. For a review card, that data is a URL.

When a phone comes within a few centimetres, the phone's own NFC reader powers the chip by induction, reads the URL, and offers to open it. The card is completely inert until a phone arrives — it will keep working, unpowered, for years.

The full journey:

  1. Tap. Customer holds their phone near the card.
  2. Notification. The phone shows a banner: "Open [link] in your browser?"
  3. Landing. The link opens — ideally a fast page with your Google and TripAdvisor review buttons front and centre.
  4. Review. One more tap lands them on the review form itself.

Which phones can tap?

  • iPhone: XS, XR (2018) and everything since reads NFC tags natively in the background — just hold the top of the phone near the card. (Older iPhones 7–X have NFC hardware but need an app to read tags, so in practice: 2018-or-newer.)
  • Android: the large majority of handsets from the last several years include NFC; it's the same radio used for Google Pay. A small minority of budget models omit it.

Coverage is high and rising — contactless payment made NFC standard — but it isn't total, which is why good review hardware pairs the chip with a printed QR code. What's stored on the chip — and the one thing to get right

The chip stores a URL, and the crucial decision is which kind. Write your raw Google review link directly onto the chip and it's fixed until you rewrite the tag — and you get no data about usage. Point it instead at a dynamic short link that redirects to your destination, and you gain:

  • Editability. Repoint from Google to TripAdvisor, swap in a new menu, fix a changed review URL — from a dashboard, with the card untouched on the counter.
  • Analytics. Every tap is logged: totals, times of day, and (via the landing page) which platform customers chose.
  • Multi-destination. One tap can offer reviews, menu and socials together instead of a single hard-wired link.

Also make sure the tag is write-locked after programming, so it can't be overwritten by a prankster with an NFC app. Reputable suppliers lock tags as standard; if you're programming your own blank tags, the lock option is in every tag-writing app — it's one tap, and it's irreversible, so confirm the URL first.

Do they actually produce reviews?

The mechanism works because it attacks the real bottleneck. Customers don't skip reviews out of unwillingness — they skip them because the default journey (search, find, scroll, sign in) outlasts their goodwill. Collapsing that journey to tap-tap-type captures intent at its peak, at the till, while the experience is minutes old.
