Why Isn't My Business Showing on Google Maps?
Business not showing on Google Maps? The eight most common causes — verification, suspension, category and ranking issues — and how to fix each one.
You search your own café on Google Maps and it's not there — or it exists, but never appears when customers search "coffee near me". These are actually two different problems: missing (your listing doesn't show at all) and invisible (it shows for your name but ranks nowhere for real searches). Here's how to diagnose which you have, and fix it.
First, diagnose which problem you have
Search Google Maps for your exact business name plus your town.
- Nothing appears → you have a missing-listing problem (causes 1–4 below).
- It appears for your name, but not for searches like "café near me" → you have a ranking problem (causes 5–8). This is by far the more common case.
If your listing is missing entirely
1. The profile was never created or claimed
Google auto-generates some listings, but not all. If searching your name and address finds nothing, create the profile yourself at business.google.com. It's free and takes minutes.
2. It isn't verified yet
Unverified profiles have limited or no visibility. Verification (video, phone, or postcard depending on the business) is the gate everything else sits behind — check your Business Profile dashboard for a pending verification banner.
3. The profile is suspended
The dashboard will say so. Common triggers for hospitality: keyword-stuffed business names ("Luigi's Best Pizza In Croydon"), address inconsistencies, or a burst of policy-violating reviews. Fix the violation first, then submit the reinstatement form — appealing without fixing gets denied and slows everything down.
4. A duplicate is winning
Two listings for one venue split your reviews and confuse Google, which sometimes shows neither well. Search variations of your name and old addresses; merge or remove duplicates via "Suggest an edit" or support.

5. Wrong or vague categories
Your primary category is the strongest relevance signal you have. A café categorised as "Restaurant" loses "café near me" to properly categorised competitors. Set the most specific true primary category and honest secondaries — the Google Business Profile checklist walks through this and every related field.
6. Too few reviews to be prominent
Google's local algorithm weighs relevance, distance and prominence — and reviews are prominence's biggest controllable input. If the venues in your Map Pack have 300 reviews and you have 14, you're not broken, you're outgunned. The fix is a steady review-collection system, and the timeline is weeks-to-months, not days.
7. You're fine — just not where you think you are
Map Pack results are radically local: results for "café near me" differ street by street, because distance is a core factor. Searching from your own premises always flatters you; searching from across town always doesn't. Judge visibility from where your customers actually are, and remember you may rank well on one side of your radius and not the other.
8. Incomplete profile suppressing clicks
No photos, missing hours, no menu link — profiles like this can technically rank but get skipped, and low engagement circles back into lower prominence. An hour of profile completion is the cheapest visibility upgrade available.
The repair sequence
- Verify (or reinstate) the profile
- Fix name, address, categories, hours — exactly and honestly
- Complete photos, menu, attributes
- Start the review engine and keep it running
- Re-check rankings monthly, searching from customer locations
Steps 1–3 are a one-off afternoon. Step 4 is the ongoing one — and the one that separates page-one venues from the rest.
Quick answers
How long until a new listing appears?
Typically within days of verification. Ranking for competitive searches builds over weeks and months as reviews and engagement accumulate.
Someone else's business shows at my address — why?
Previous tenant's listing, most likely. Mark it "Permanently closed" via Suggest an edit, or claim it and update if you inherited the business.
Does my website affect Maps visibility?
Somewhat — it feeds relevance and legitimacy signals. But for local ranking, your Business Profile and review stream do the heavy lifting; plenty of Map Pack winners have barely any website at all.
